My friend downloaded a game for her son and now cannot start windows?

The last thing we did to troubleshoot was a diagnostic startup with step by step confirmation, with choosing yes from load windows drivers, on back and choosing no from that point forward. The error message is windows protection error and will only boot in safe mode. Under all categories in mscong, the config.sys option is unavailable, but checked. Does anyone have any suggestions?
